After being awarded the Ritterkreuz on March 11 for 67 victories, Dahl had been named Kommodore of JG z.b.V at the end of May 1944. This special purpose Geschwader, zur besonderen Verwendung a Reichsverteidigung Operational Training Unit comprising simply of a Geschwaderstab, was tasked with bringing fighter Gruppen in the 7th Jagd division area of southern Germany up to speed with air defence tactics. ( eg conversion of I./JG 5 to the Höhengruppe high altitude cover role on the Bf 109 G-6/AS ). Then in June and following the initial successes achieved by the Sturmstaffel and its subsequent integration into IV./JG 3, Major Walther Dahl was appointed Kommodore of JG 300. After the outstanding success of the Sturm tactic over Oschersleben he would be charged specifically with the task of converting this unit's II Gruppe to the Sturm mission as he relates in his book Rammjäger. He was to lead the premier Reich's defence Geschwader through some of the hardest batles of the air war over Germany during the summer and autumn of 1944.

" ..On the next morning, 15 September 1944, I flew to Rastenburg in East Prussia where I was met by an SS-Obersturmfuehrer of the Fuehrerbegleitschutz Kommando, Hitler's personal bodyguard. It took us some twenty minutes to pass the outer and then the inner checkpoints of the Wolfsschanze before I was shown into an ante-room. In the falling twilight I found myself staring out of the open window at the surrounding woods and the camouflaged barrack buildings. Suddenly I saw a dark form, bent over as if carrying a heavy weight, shuffling towards the bunker. It was Hitler ! He entered the room. His Adjutant, Oberst v. Below, made the introductions and invited me to make my report. The previous evening in the Stabsquartier Goering had instructed me to give a full and accurate report of the activities of my Geschwader. I was to hold nothing back. When I had finished Hitler took my hand and said ;
".. I'm glad you're here in person. I've heard a lot about you and the battles fought by the brave pilots of your Geschwader - your Sturmgruppen have achieved decisive results and I am proud to have such pilots in the Luftwaffe.."
He gestured for me to take a seat and sat directly opposite me. He then came straight to the point - our last three missions of 11, 12 and 13 September, the real reason why I was here ..He asked me to describe each of them in detail, with particular emphasis on our 'black day' - 13 September..Here was a chance to broach a subject that was our greatest concern - the fact that the Me 262 was to be deployed as a bomber ..
"..the greatest danger for us in the air are the enemy fighters. Only the deployment of a very very fast fighter will give us the possibility to evade the enemy escort fighters and hit the bombers before they reach their targets".
I paused and waited for Hitler's reaction.
" you mean the Me 262. Tell me more..."
Three hours later our discussion came to an end. I was astounded at Hitler's grasp of technical details. And I had the distinct impression that my plea would not go unheeded.."
Despite his successes, Dahl had become increasingly disillusioned in the face of overwhelming Allied aerial superiority. He was to be dismissed from his command after a falling out with Herman Goering - in his biography 'Rammjaeger' he described his refusal to order the inexperienced pilots of III./JG 300 to counter an American bombing raid in poor weather conditions. The events took place during an official visit by Goering to Jueterbog.

Dahl was nonetheless appointed Inspector of Day Fighters in January 1945 and continued to fly combat missions. He was awarded the Eichenlaub in February 1945 for 92 victories, scoring his 100th victory at the end of the month. In March 1945 he transitioned to the Me-262 and flew under the command of Heinz Bär in III/EJG2. On March 27, he shot down two P-47s and scored what in his words were his 128th and last victory, a P-51, on April 26, 1945. However there is little or no evidence of the majority of his claims over the 100 figure - the '128 victories' always cited originated in his self-serving biography...it is likewise impossible to state as so many apparently do on the Net and elsewhere that, 'with a total of 36 four-engine bombers to his credit, Walther Dahl was the second-leading Luftwaffe bomber Experte' (for example, Cleaver on modelingmadness.com).

Post-war, he became involved with Hans Ulrich Rudel in neo-Nazi political activities and was one of the founders of the NDP in the 1960s. Faced with government opposition, he retired in the 1970s and died in 1985 aged 67. His bio was a rather lurid account of his wartime experiences, possibly compiled by his wife according to the historian of JG 300. The figures quoted for bomber losses and German victories quoted throughout the book are easily discredited. The figure of 128 victories achieved by Dahl has stuck, doubtless through endless repetition. Likewise there is no evidence of a JG 300 war diary sometime rumoured to be in Dahl's possesion...

The image depicts Dahls's Fw 190 A-8 as pictured in Peter Rodeike's Focke Wulf Jagdflugzeug 190 published by Struve Druck. Apparently photographed later that year there is not much evidence here of the classic Sturmbock enhancements. This is a unique machine, described by Ernst Schroeder as an unwieldy 'dungheap', heavily armed both with four MG 151 20mm cannon and the upper cowl machine guns and sporting the rare B-17 in crosshairs insignia apparently only carried by Stabs machines of JG 300.
An advocate of 'ramming' as described in his exaggerated post-war account 'Rammjäger' , Ramm Dahl is held in something less than affection by former members of the Sturmgruppen interviewed recently (as related in a recent interview given by Hans Weik to Bernd Willmer). Although pilots volunteering to join a Sturmgruppe may have signed the Sturmgruppe affidavit, indicating an absolute moral commitment to bring down enemy bombers, by ramming if necessary, over the initial four months or so of the Sturmstaffel's and then IV./JG 3's existence there had been few rammings. Hptm Wilhelm Moritz considered the pilots signed declarations or Verpflichtungserklärungen senseless and superfluous and would quietly drop the practice soon after Sturmstaffel 1 had been integrated into IV./JG3.

Photographed at Loebnitz bei Bitterfeld, this is 'roter Hahn', the Fw 190 A-8 assigned to Feldwebel Hannes Theis. Note the inscription under the cockpit. The close up reveals that there is no cockerel insignia on the fuselage side. Theis claimed three B-17s, two B-24s, four P-51s and two P-47s at the controls of this aircraft. This FW 190 survived through to May 1945 before being blown up at Holzkirchen ..

The following images were furnished exclusively for this site via Jean-Yves Lorant, author of the two volume history of JG 300 published by Docavia in France during 2005 - 'Bataille dans le Ciel d'Allemagne'. For today's update I have posted the first of a series of photos showing Hubert Engst of 6./JG 300 preparing for a spell of cockpit readiness during November 1944. The first photo is a snapshot of Engst with his wife Elisabeth in front of the pilot's FW 190 Sturmbock 'Yellow 2' W.Nr 682181 and provides a super view of his Lederkombination leather flying suit with the Luftwaffe armband. In the second picture Engst is seen climbing up into the cockpit -note the EZ 42 gyroscopic sight above the instrument panel. Engst had flown his first sorties as a Wilde Sau nightfighter during the summer of 1943 and survived the war with about ten victories.

The next image is an extremely rare shot of Ofhr. Gerhard 'Harry' Piel* of 5.(Sturm)/JG 300 at cockpit readiness. Piel lost his life in 'Red 5' in the dog-fighting of 27 November 1944, falling - like many of his comrades that day- to the P-51s of the 357th FG over central Germany. Note the inscription on the cockpit side armour plate - 'Jungs hollt fest !', a north German platt - or low - Deutsch expression which roughly translates as 'Hang in there boys!'

* so-called after the German leading actor Harry Piel, active in films from 1913 to 1950. Piel turned director in 1924, turning out such box-office successes as Mann Gegen Mann (1928) and Artisten (1935). His last directorial effort was 1953's Gesprengte Gitten (aka Panic), which he also produced, wrote, and starred in..

The next image was taken on the morning of 27 November 1944. Richard Loefgen - one of the original complement of JG 300 wilde Sau nightfighters - is seen preparing to get airborne at the controls of FW 190 A-8/R2 Sturmbock 'Red 3'. On the right is Konrad Bauer, wounded during September and who thus did not fly this sortie. Loefgen was shot down and killed during March 1945.

............the following stills were filmed at Holzkirchen in August 1944 and show Fw 190 A-8/R2 Sturmjäger of II.(Sturm) JG 300 preparing for a sortie.Note that the machines in the first two stills are equipped with the rearwards firing fuselage mounted rocket launcher, the so-called Krebs-Gerät. These are likely to have been machines on detachment with the Sturmgruppe from the experimental JGr. 10. "White 7" in the lower images features the Sturm fuselage armor and Panzerglas quarter-panes. Note also the small circle to the rear of the cowl machine gun cover, indicating that the BMW power plant features the so-called erhöhte Notleistung emergency power boost system. It is just possible to make out the short barrel MK 108 30mm cannon in the out-board wing station...
